I would try my best to select a few key takeaways to share here:-
a) Income difference between those with degree and those without is getting smaller.
b) Since the huge expansion of higher education, there are 400,000 to500,000 Filipinos graduating from the universities/colleges every year. However, the job market is not yet ready to absorb all of them, and hence some of them are looking for overseas employment.
c) School administrators are proud that they are able to develop a large group of young, energetic, well-educated Filipinos who are ready for Global Employment. Hence, the tagline: “I am a Filipino & I am a Global Worker!”.
d) Top five marketable skills in the Philippines: computer skills, quantitative skills, communication skills, marketing & selling skills and leadership skills.
e) Top skills required by Software industry in Philippines: Basic IQ & aptitude (essentially common sense), attitude & confidence, language skills, teamwork and then only IT skills (eg: Java, .Net, PHP, Oracle etc)
f) BPO is a fast growing industry with 300,000 full-time jobs today and generating USD4 Billion worth of revenue for the Philippines. It offers fast track promotion for top achievers. It is possible to get promoted more than once a year. Key skills needed include ability to listen and comprehend phone conversations, ability to respond to anger and sympathy, ability to build rapport fast, confidence and learn the relevant industry/company details.
g) Key expectations of hiring fresh grads for hospitality industry is the expectations of fresh graduates to work in shift and potentially any day in the year, any time in the day, and have a serving attitude.
h) Best practice for internships:
i) Employers to create an environment for interns to gain relevant work experience and treat interns professionally.
ii) Students to treat applying for internship as if they are applying for real jobs and use internship as a stepping stone for a full-time offer.
iii) Universities/Colleges to understand industry needs, as well as guide/motivate/prepare students towards successful internship.
i) Skills sought after for interns: ability to write and speak well, ability to make decision, analytical skills, problem solving skills and interpersonal skills.
j) JobStreet.com launched the Philippines’ 1st Interactive Career Guide CD which covers Self-Assessment, Job Search Toolkit, Winning Resumes, Winning Interviews, Job Search Partner etc, besides also launching the Philippines’ 1st School Administrators Forum to discuss among school administrators on various issues in the industry.
Hope that you had picked up a tip or two from the above. It is Philippines specific, but the skill sets needed are usually generic across region.
